Patent registration in Iran

Secure exclusive rights to your invention in Iran with a carefully prepared application and attentive prosecution through to grant and beyond.

Why patent your invention in Iran

A patent gives its owner the right to prevent others from making, using, selling or importing the protected invention in the territory where it is granted. Because patent rights are national, an invention protected abroad is free for anyone to exploit in Iran unless a patent is obtained there.

For manufacturers, technology companies and research institutions with commercial interests in Iran, a local patent turns an innovation into an enforceable asset. It supports licensing, strengthens your position with partners and distributors, and provides a legal basis to act against copies.

What makes an invention patentable

In general terms, an invention must be new, involve an inventive step and be capable of industrial application. Some subject matter is excluded from patent protection altogether. Whether a particular invention qualifies is a technical and legal question, and it is best answered before an application is filed.

We review your invention and any existing disclosures, identify the features most likely to support protection, and advise on how claims should be framed. Where an invention is not a good candidate for a patent, we will tell you and discuss alternatives such as industrial design protection or keeping the know-how confidential.

Filing from abroad

Many of our patent clients are based outside Iran and already hold applications or patents in other countries. We work with them and their existing patent attorneys to bring the same invention into Iran efficiently, coordinating translations, documents and priority claims so that the Iranian filing fits the client's wider portfolio strategy.

Timing matters. Priority periods and other filing windows are strict, so we recommend contacting us as early as possible once an Iranian filing is under consideration.

Keeping your patent in force

A granted patent remains valuable only while it is maintained. Maintenance payments fall due periodically for the life of the patent, and a missed payment can cause the right to lapse. We record every deadline and remind you well in advance, so maintenance never depends on memory.

Frequently asked questions

Can I file a patent in Iran if my invention is already patented in another country?

Often yes, provided the invention is still new for Iranian purposes and the relevant filing windows have not closed. Prior publication of the invention can affect patentability, so it is important to review your situation before filing.

Who owns an invention made by an employee?

Ownership depends on the employment arrangements and the applicable law. We recommend clarifying ownership in writing before filing so that the correct applicant is named.

Do I need to translate my application?

Applications must meet the language and formal requirements of the Iranian registry. We manage the preparation of the required documents as part of the filing.
